Institute for Capacity Building

About Us

In spring 2006, The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) launched the Institute for Capacity Building (ICB). The primary objective of the Institute is to support strengthening the capacity of the 39 UNCF member private historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in the areas of fundraising, enrollment and retention, academic programming and faculty development, financial management, historic preservation of campus facilities, executive leadership and governance. The launching of the Institute for Capacity Building underscores the strategic intent of UNCF to support the efforts of its member institutions, within their unique traditions, missions and circumstances, to remain viable, compelling and competitive choices for the growing number of African American and other students of color seeking a college education. The mission of ICB is informed by the realization that building and sustaining the capacity of institutions to advance their missions permanently assures their place among the community of this nation’s institutions providing quality higher education.
