HBCUs’ unique combination of historic tradition and modern mission poses a unique challenge: how can schools provide their students with 21st century educations in buildings on campuses with histories that date back to the Civil War? In the future, the HBCU Facilities and Infrastructure Enhancement Program will help schools move from general recognition of the need for enhancement and preservation to readiness to begin planning—and raising resources for—specific improvements, including facility restoration, traditional construction and green buildings.
